“Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg
About Mother’s Day RBG Run
The Mother’s Day RBG Run is a family fun event at Mt. Tabor Park, just minutes from downtown Portland. The run uses the red, blue, and green trails and some roads and paths on this volcanic cinder cone. We also wanted to honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg, aka “Notorious RBG,” who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until she died in 2020, by making Mother’s Day RBG Run a charity event for the Malala Fund. Much of Ginsburg’s 1$ million Berggruen prize money, as well as her estate, was donated to the Malala Fund, one of Ginsburg’s favorite charities that invests in girls’ education programs to help girls go to school and reach their full potential. If you can’t make the run but would still like to donate to the Malala Fund, please see our fundraising page.

Courses
The 5k and 10k start and finish are at Picnic Area A near the visitor’s center. There are no aid stations for either distance. There will be water and Gnarly Hydrate at the start, so bring a water bottle or handheld for the run. Use the discount code DIRT15 for 15% off to try Gnarly Hydrate and other Gnarly nutrition products. Our friends at Ultimate Direction have great handhelds for running.
5K Run/Hike- This women’s only run starts around the picnic area to the green trail via SE Park St. Enjoy East Portland and Mt. Hood views. After a mile, the route switches to the red trail up the hill for the most challenging climb on the course AKA “Stairway to Heaven.” Runners turn right where the red trail intersects with N. Tabor St. Take the road to the green trail where it goes behind the visitors center and around the volcano section of the park. Follow the green trail down the steps to Reservoir Loop Drive and head back up the blue trail for an uphill half-mile to the finish.

5k elevation profile
10k- The 10k follows the 5k route for the first 2.6 miles, where the two distances split at Reservoir Loop Drive. The course then follows the blue trail around reservoir #6. After running around #6, runners will turn right at the green trail and then take a connector trail to reservoir #1. After circling #1, runners turn right on the blue trail to Reservoir Loop Drive to enjoy a beautiful view of downtown Portland. Stay on the blue trail to circle reservoir #5 for the last reservoir. The course turns left up the red trail around Poison Oak hill. The trail joins the blue trail for the last climb to the top of Mt. Tabor. Circle the top around Harvey Scott Circle and take a connector trail for a steep downhill to the blue trail. Turn right and join the 5k course for the last quarter-mile to the finish.
